Australian #51X Silky-Oak (new and old) tree wood - raw PEN blanks cross cut

This is one other of the woods sold to me by the local timber mill, old fellow and founder, as recently he passed on the running of the mill to his oldest son.

The old fellow (Bill) has been keeping and moving these logs in the yard for many years, when he first got this Silky-Oak tree from near by, which he actually slabbed straight away and store it on the outer edge of the open shed where, it got lots of weather still. As always he kept waiting for a special something to do with them, himself but, that never happened.  We decided to reserve a small area in the yard for all his treasures but, when his son took over, he needed space and all those dozens of logs, on his fathers treasures pile, had to go.

At 78 years of age, I think is time for him to rest a little and use some extra time that he never had, on things that he never had time for.  He still wants to work with wood in his shed at home, and from what I've been told by its oldest son, he has enough wood at home to last him 50 years...!

Unfortunately for him and fortunately for me, the edges of the logs when slabbed were kept on top of the slabs to protect them a bit, and while, he wasn't letting go of the good/middle short slabs (2 logs) I manage to convince him to sell me the 4 edges, that were weathered considerably, something that I still could use form my small round and square blanks and pen blanks, plus some others bits and odds that I will list next.  The wood is old and very dry, the colours and grains are just crazy, particularly around any knots, the wood works and finishes very easily...!!

(The new wood) This was a mature tree that I cut, at Easter 2013 in the same property from where I had cut and collected all those old fruit trees, from a friend's new property that he purchased for his oldest soon that works with his father in the work-shop.

The tree was very mature but, and again, planted in the wrong place, for the this friend new plans for the property so, it had to go...!

Some of this wood was processed immediately into oversized pen blanks, and stack in draying towers for drying.  The blanks are just now, dry enough for use...!
